Hello competitors,

The 2010 Phoenix DanceSport Challenge is ready to go.

Here are answers to some of your Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s).

Who can compete?

You must be a USA Dance member in good standing. To compete, your membership
category must be listed as Dancesport Athlete, student, or minor.

Do I need to upgrade my membership category to DanceSport Athlete?

If your current membership category of USA Dance is listed as Social or Ballroom
Dancer, you will need to upgrade your category to DanceSport Athlete, which has
an annual fee of $60. If your membership is less than 9 months old, you will only pay
the difference. To do this, email your request to the National Membership Director,
Gerald Bonmer at gbonmer@comcast.net. He will be able to help you get this done.

How do I sign up as a USA Dance Member?

Here is the link from our website: http://phoenixusadance.org/join.html. You can either join online or download, print, fill out, and mail the membership application to the address listed.

Can I dance with more than one partner?

If you are dancing with more than one partner in different events, please SIGN and  mail all of your Entry Forms for each partnership and submit these together.

If this is not possible, please indicate on your Entry Form that you will be dancing with someone else and that the form will be mailed separately.

Do I need to pay more if I'm dancing with more than one partner?

No. Each person only needs to pay one fee no matter how many partners they have or how many events they are doing.

Can I jump over a level or proficiency category?

No. This is not allowed.

Does the novice level mean the same thing as “newcomer/beginner”?

No. After completing the closed syllabus categories of bronze, silver and gold, novice is the first level of the more advanced, open categories.

Novice category not allowed with Bronze or Silver syllabus levels
This has always been the rule. The rule was just not consistently enforced
throughout the years. National is now enforcing this rule.

In accordance with the USA Dance DanceSport rulebook:
You may dance in only two consecutive events in the same proficiency category.

Example 1: If you dance in the smooth category, you may dance Bronze/Silver,
Silver/Gold, Gold/Novice, Novice/Pre-Champ, or Pre-Champ/Champ in the same
proficiency classification. You cannot jump over a level.  The levels must be
consecutive and you may not dance below your minimum proficiency level for
that classification.

Example 2: If you have previously entered and danced in Novice,
Pre-Champ in prior competitions, you may not dance in the syllabus
levels, Bronze, Silver or Gold, for the category you have danced
Novice or Pre-Champ. You have established yourself as an “Open”
level more advanced dancer. You may not move back. Why would you?
This doesn’t mean this is all you can dance.  You may dance in all
4 categories/styles separately (smooth, rhythm, standard, Latin)
in two consecutive events with no additional entry fees required
in our February competition.

How many events can I dance in?

Competitors may enter any proficiency level for which both partners are eligible,
as well as the next higher level.  Be aware that the bronze, silver and gold levels
are restricted to syllabus steps. Refer to Proficiency Level Chart on page 4 of
General Information/
Entry Form.

Do I have to dance all dances in an event (or heat)?

Yes. Competitors must dance all dances in the event(s) they choose.

Can I wear my ball gown?

Costumes and/or ball gowns are only allowed in the open proficiency levels – novice thru championship (also includes senior syllabus proficiency levels.)
Note: All competitors please keep in mind the “Good Taste Rule” 3.10.2 which interpreted says that if a costume gives the appearance of being too revealing or is non-compliant with the Dress Code Rules, you may be disqualified.

Thank you very much. See you all on the dance floor on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010.

Dance well,
